Overview
The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) is seeking a dynamic, tenure-track physician, scientist, or physician-scientist to lead innovative cancer research efforts in real-world data (RWD) and adaptive clinical trial design. The selected candidate will hold dual appointments as:
- Director of Cancer Research at the Center for Real World Data/Adaptive Clinical Trials, within the University of Maryland-Institute for Health Computing (UM-IHC), and
- Assistant Director for Learning Health System and Pragmatic Oncology Research at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC).
This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of oncology research through novel methodologies that leverage computational tools, decentralized clinical trials, and inclusive population data.
About the Institute
The UM-IHC—a joint initiative between UMB, the University of Maryland College Park, and the University of Maryland Medical System—is a large-scale, state-supported center based in North Bethesda. Its mission is to develop a real-world, data-driven learning health system to improve outcomes for all Marylanders. The institute emphasizes inclusive, community-based research and broad patient representation, particularly among underserved populations.
Position Responsibilities
As Director of Cancer Research at UM-IHC, you will:
- Build and lead a multidisciplinary team of data scientists, clinicians, analysts, and community health experts.
- Develop scalable infrastructure to conduct pragmatic, decentralized oncology trials.
- Collaborate with community partners across Maryland to increase diverse clinical trial participation.
- Design, implement, and oversee adaptive and pragmatic clinical trials through the Electronic Health Record.
- Forge partnerships with federal agencies (e.g., FDA) and expand public-private research collaborations.
As Assistant Director at UMGCCC, you will:
- Serve as the designated leader of UMGCCC’s Big Data and Real-World Evidence Program.
- Bridge collaboration between UMGCCC researchers and UM-IHC’s technological ecosystem.
- Establish a comprehensive and searchable Data Commons integrating clinical, lab, imaging, and social determinants of health data.
- Facilitate partnerships with pharma and regulators to advance therapies that address the needs of historically underserved cancer populations.
Candidate Qualifications
Required:
- MD, PhD, or equivalent; for clinicians, eligibility for medical licensure in Maryland and BC/BE certification.
- Established record of independent research, publications, and successful extramural funding.
- Expertise in real-world evidence, adaptive trial methodologies, and clinical data science.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary research teams.
- Commitment to mentoring and program development.
Preferred:
- Strong understanding of oncology-specific clinical research.
- Background in decentralized trial execution and digital health tools.
- Demonstrated engagement with underrepresented communities in research contexts.
Faculty Rank and Compensation
Appointments are available at the Assistant Professor level or higher, based on qualifications. Salary will reflect experience and rank. The base range for Assistant Professors is $300,797 to $450,000, exclusive of additional departmental incentives and bonuses.
